One Anna returns this Independence Day

Happy 80th Independence Day! This year, we are proud to bring a historical coin back to India. As pictured, this 1943 One Anna coin was issued under British India during the reign of King George VI. Crafted from nickel-brass with a distinct 12-notched scalloped edge, it features its denomination inscribed in four regional scripts: Urdu, Telugu, Devanagari, and Bengali. Minted at the height of World War II—a time of severe global upheaval and economic shifts throughout the British Empire—this coin carries remarkable historical context. We acquired it in 2023 at an estate sale in San Leandro, California, from a Scottish merchant, and bringing it back to India has been my goal ever since. While it may not rank as a major archaeological recovery, its symbolic and personal resonance is profound. Returning an artifact from the closing chapter of the British Raj around August 15th creates a meaningful full-circle moment. It stands as a vibrant link to a critical era in our country's past ...

Letter to a young kid in India

I am a thirty three year old happily married man in Silicon Valley, CA who came from a tier three city in India. I work for a tier three company in the Bay area where FAANGM are the first tier companies in the Software industry. FAANGM means Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Microsoft. Though I had an offer from a tier one company but my urge to work in a Climate Change software domain prompted me to join an Energy software company. Recently I saw the Republic Day parade of India. And I cherish this day with my thirteen dollars Indian national flag which I bought from my first salary back in 2014 in the United States.  The reason I bought it was to satisfy my yearning for my beloved nation. It is ironic how you crave for your land only when you are away from her. Lovers and close relatives have also reported similar experiences. It was summer of 2018 when one fine day at my office I took a coffee break. One person approached me and started asking about my well being. I am not a complete loner so I have my share of friendly colleagues. But this person was an Intern in my office and had no specific reason to talk to me. I was amused because in labor code-of-conduct generally this is a breach of social ladder! And anyways in that pre-pandemic World who used to ask for welfare of a stranger? I learnt over the next half an hour that this person is working in our ML team and is a PhD graduate student at Caltech, California. Next I learnt that his subject is to study the satellite images and gauge Carbon Dioxide percentage in the atmosphere. This was great because I couldn't believe that somebody with that kind of work pressure can be so cheerful. I studied over the course of a few more coffee breaks that he is a Buddhist follower .
